ARCHIVED - First ever kids playgrounds specially adapted for climate change installed in Lorqui
Two new playgrounds are being built in the La Condomina and Los Valentines Urbanisations

The town of Lorquí in central Murcia is set to have two new playparks for youngsters and children, both of which are remarkable for the fact that they will be specially adapted to cope with the effects of climate change.
For instance, the new playgrounds will “minimise run-off when it rains and increase the number of trees,” say sources from the Town Council.
They will also have recycled plastic benches and the ground is made from recycled rubber. And as it is totally porous, the water will not run down the street when it rains, meaning fewer puddles and minimising other damaging effects of rainfall, such as dragging.
One of the playparks will be located on the La Condomina Urbanisation next to Calle María Zambrano de Lorquí. It will consist of a space of 960m2 and cost a total of 107,928.15 euros.
The other playground will be on Calle Antonio Ruiz Carbonell next to Los Valentines Urbanisation with a space of 2,100m2 and a cost of 154,831.60 euros.
The Mayor of Lorquí, Joaquín Hernández, explained that the project is based on “a pioneering idea of the Lorquí Town Council, using natural areas and porous paving”.
“In this way, we generate a public space suitable for the effects of climate change aligned with our local urban agenda and dignify and revalue the area. Continuing with the work we have been doing for some time to improve parks and gardens,” he said.
These will have new areas of vegetation as well as reusing local pruning waste to improve the land. In fact, as a result of using the porous rubber, the comfort of the play and sports areas is improved with the installation of a layer of artificial grass without reducing the drainage capacity.
The total investment amounts to 262,759.75 euros and the parks are estimated to benefit more than 7,500 people throughout the municipality.
The project will be completed by the end of this month and includes the renovation of the children’s play area, more shaded areas, the planting of native plants, exercise equipment and a multi-sports court.
