Construction begins on new car park in Lorca
The car park, which will be finished in 9 months’ time, will have two floors and 187 parking spaces and cost 2.3 million euros
Work has begun on the construction of a new car park located on Calle Periodista Ángela Ruiz in Lorca, a development which aims to “improve mobility and access to the city centre,” according to the City Council.
The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil Jódar, together with the Councillor for Development, Rosa María Medina Mínguez, supervised the start of work this Wednesday July 24. The new car park is part of the municipal efforts to improve mobility and sustainability in the city.
It has a tender budget of 2,332,638 euros, co-financed by the European Union’s Next Generation funds and Lorca City Council itself.
The works will take an estimated nine months to complete and will consist of an underground car park with two floors – on the ground floor and in the basement – covering a total surface area of 4,985m2.
It will have 176 spaces for cars, of which 9 will be equipped with chargers for electric cars and 8 will be specially reserved for people with reduced mobility. There will also be 11 spaces for motorbikes.
Other facilities in the new car park will include toilets, a control cabin, a maintenance room, storage rooms and a lift, and there will even be solar panels installed to comply with environmental criteria.
The project also includes the improvement of the urbanisation of adjacent streets, such as renewing the paving stones and street lamps in a newly created road in the area currently occupied by a plot of land.
During the visit to the breaking of ground on the site, Mayor Fulgencio Gil said, “Today is an important day for Lorca, as we are initiating a key project for our city and for its transformation. This project is designed to adapt to the present and future needs of Lorca, allowing part of it to be built on for the future expansion of the municipal Social Services offices.”
He added, “This car park, which is located on the edge of the low emission zone, is to contribute to improving air quality by preventing vehicles from entering the city centre or other urban centres, while encouraging the use of public transport.
“This car park is not only a solution to parking and traffic problems, but with this type of initiative we are also moving towards a more accessible Lorca, thanks to our firm commitment to sustainable urban development adapted to the needs of our citizens.”
He also took the opportunity to explain that Lorca Council is committed to the new city model, within the Local Framework 2032 commitment: “We are living in a new stage of growth, a change of cycle, in which stability, management and economic freedom prevail. This new car park is located in an area of expansion of the city, ‘El Gato’, which will enjoy a profound transformation in a short time, as we are seeing and which is truly interesting, as in its surroundings there are large green areas and facilities such as the National Police Station, Lorca Sutullena Health Centre, the School of Music and Plastic Arts.”
Just a few months ago, the Council approved a development project of 139 homes and 219 parking spaces in the area of Camino Marín. These are homes that will be built in three blocks with open multi-family buildings and a maximum height of five floors, and others of two to four and single-family homes.
There is also the construction of the second phase of the ‘Los Tres Tenores’ Residential Complex, which will be made up of 80 homes spread across three 10-storey towers, of the ‘open block’ type, and another new building in Grecia Street, which will also have 10 storeys and 15 new homes.
