Nearly 3km of copper cable stolen from Corvera airport

Eleven people have been arrested for robbing cables from roads serving Murcia International Airport

Eleven men have been arrested following the theft of almost three kilometres of copper cable from the public lighting system serving Corvera Airport.

According to the Guardia Civil, the stolen cable had an estimated value of more than €280,000 once the damage caused and replacement costs were taken into account.

The investigation began after airport management reported the disappearance of copper wiring from lighting installations along the roads leading to the airport.

Officers believe the thefts took place during March and April. Investigators found evidence suggesting those involved had opened underground access points and cut sections of cable before removing them from the network.

During enquiries near Corvera, the Guardia Civil discovered burnt cable remains, tools and other items believed to be linked to the operation.

Investigators say some of the stolen wiring had been burned in open areas to remove its plastic insulation, leaving clean copper that could be sold more easily to scrap metal dealers.

Technical examinations carried out during the investigation reportedly confirmed matches between the recovered material and the cable stolen from the airport infrastructure.

The breakthrough came after officers identified a vehicle that had been present in the area during the times the thefts were believed to have occurred. The same vehicle was later linked to visits to metal recycling and waste management businesses where investigators believe the copper was sold.

At one recycling facility in the Vega Media area of Murcia, officers detected what they described as repeated sales of burnt copper.

According to the Guardia Civil, the suspects operated as an organised criminal group with different members allegedly carrying out specific tasks. Investigators believe some were responsible for stealing the cable and stripping away the insulation, while others handled the sale or receipt of the material.

The operation has resulted in the arrest of 11 men, who are being investigated on suspicion of ongoing theft, criminal damage, handling stolen goods and environmental offences linked to the burning of the cable.

The investigation remains open and the case has been passed to the relevant judicial authorities.
