Los Alcázares announces new flood guidance as weather warnings are issued

Parents are being asked not to travel to schools to collect children during orange or red alerts, while residents are warned about flooded roads and garages

Los Alcázares is stepping up its preparations for heavy rain, with the Ayuntamiento issuing new advice on what residents should do if intense or torrential rainfall affects the municipality. The guidance covers everything from getting children home from school to what to do if water starts entering a garage and is intended to help people stay safe if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

One of the most important messages is for parents. If heavy rain has already started and an orange or red weather alert is in place, parents are being asked not to travel to schools or secondary schools to collect their children.  Instead, they should wait until municipal services say that it is safe to make the journey. Schools will continue looking after children who remain on the premises and will work with municipal services and follow the procedures set out in the Los Alcázares emergency plan.

The advice is intended to prevent families from heading onto roads that could quickly become flooded, particularly in areas where water can arrive from the ramblas (river beds). The Ayuntamiento is asking residents to follow official information from the municipality and schools rather than attempting to make their own way through potentially dangerous areas.

There is also a very clear warning for anyone whose home or property is affected by rising water: don't put yourself in danger trying to save your belongings.

Residents are being told not to enter garages or basements to move vehicles or retrieve possessions once water starts coming in. They should also never attempt to drive a car through an area that is already flooded. People are advised to avoid unnecessary journeys during periods of heavy rain and not to park in ramblas, low-lying areas or places known to be at risk of flooding.

If a road is covered by water, don't try to cross it on foot or by car. Road closures and instructions from the Policía Local, Protección Civil, Guardia Civil and other emergency services should also be followed.

There are steps residents can take before the rain arrives too. The Ayuntamiento recommends checking and clearing drains, gutters, patios and terraces, as well as making sure water pumps and flood barriers are ready to use.

Items that could be swept away by floodwater should be brought inside from patios and terraces. Important documents, electrical equipment and valuables should also be moved out of garages, basements and ground-floor areas where possible.

The guidance also applies to local businesses, farms, construction sites and tourist accommodation.
Hotels and holiday accommodation are being asked to make sure visitors who aren't familiar with Los Alcázares know what to do in an emergency, where the safe areas are and which numbers to call.
The Ayuntamiento has been carrying out work to clear drainage channels in recent weeks and is also preparing exercises involving the installation of flood protection barriers.
