ARCHIVED - Los Alcázares council hoping to open red flag beaches soon
Underwater seabed inspection brigades are to clean Carrión and Manzanares beaches
Los Alcázares town council is coming under increasing pressure from local businesses to get three of its principal town beaches fully open for visitors, as Manzanares, Carrión and La Concha continue to be the only beaches in the Murcia Region still flying red flags for no bathing in peak tourist season.
Although the council is determined to force the national government to pay for the work required to clean up the shorelines of the beaches, patience is wearing thin amongst local traders who aren´t worried about who pays for the work, but just want somebody to hurry up and do it so that bathers can safely enter the water.
The council says it “may evaluate in the next few days opening two of the beaches that are still closed, Manzanares and Carrión,” as the Mayor maintains that “the first thing is the safety of neighbours and tourists, despite how important it is for the people that all the beaches are open".
The council has replaced the promenade street furniture which was washed out to sea by the floods, repainted, re-positioned signs and replaced sand on the beaches, but the problem remains the amount of debris still on the seabed in the water just off the beach, which contains all kinds of rubbish and debris washed into the Mar Menor during the Gota Fría last September, which has still not been removed, in spite of numerous requests from the council for the national Costas Department, which is responsible for the maintenance of the shore, to do so.
The council has refused to pay for the cleaning and continued to pressure Costas, fruit of which is now that a Maritime Salvage team from the national rescue services will be sent in during the next few days to clean up the shorelines of these Los Alcázares beaches.
Local residents have been out snorkeling themselves to try and remove the rubbish, but the council insists that this must be done under controlled conditions to ensure the protection of residents
For many local businesses, which have suffered from a series of damaging floods followed by a long Covid lockdown, this can´t come soon enough!
