Fourth lane to be added to Murcia-Cartagena A-30 motorway
The €12 million project will ease traffic jams on both the A-30 and MU-30 roads

Relief is finally on the way for Murcia drivers on one of the A-30 Cartagena-Madrid motorway’s worst bottlenecks. The Ministry of Transport has announced plans to ease traffic congestion at the busy junction with the MU-30, an area that connects to key industrial estates like San Ginés and Oeste, as well as towns such as El Palmar and Alcantarilla.
The €12 million project, which will soon go out to tender, will add a fourth lane over a 1.2-kilometre stretch near La Alberca in the direction of Cartagena. The upgrade targets the stretch between kilometre markers 144.9 and 146.1, where traffic jams are a daily headache, especially during peak business hours.
The new lane will serve as a holding area for vehicles exiting the A-30 toward the MU-30 ring road, reducing the pressure on through traffic. According to the Ministry, this will prevent queues from spilling over and blocking one of the A-30’s main lanes.
Around 100,000 vehicles pass through the area daily, creating major slowdowns that affect both commuters and freight transport.
In addition to adding the new lane, the plan includes widening the overpass at Camino de Salabosque and improving the speed and safety of the junction.
The MU-30 highway, which runs to the municipality of Alcantarilla, will connect to the new Northwest Arch, most of which will open this summer.
This extra lane is in addition to other initiatives the Ministry has implemented in recent months on the A-30 near Murcia, such as the recently awarded €14.6 million contract to reduce noise as it passes through the capital.
Also included are road marking repainting works, awarded in February for €1.2 million, as well as street lighting renovation works, tendered in December for another €3.2 million.
The Ministry has also unblocked the final section of the Reguerón highway in Murcia. Last week, it put out to tender the project for the remaining eight kilometres between Beniaján and El Palmar, for which it will invest €190 million. It will connect with the Northwest Arc and the A-30.
