ARCHIVED - Lorca takes final steps to approve new health centre
The medical centre will be built in the Lorca district of San Cristóbal
The long-awaited health centre in the San Cristóbal neighbourhood in Lorca is set to receive final approval at the next plenary session, scheduled for Monday February 13.
Mayor Diego José Mateos explained that the process to obtain permission for the essential facility, which has been in the pipeline since 2018, has been complex, since the identified site is in a known flood zone.
Assuming the project gets the green light on Monday, the mayor estimates that the next legal stage should take between three and six months to complete, allowing for any objections that might be lodged against the health centre. For its part, Lorca City Council has submitted comprehensive plans for the facility, together with a report from the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) that outlines the flood risks. This, and other measures, are continuing behind the scenes to “accelerate” the process of obtaining the plot of land, the mayor explained.
Some of the other steps include the purchasing of two buildings on the site and a swap for another. In the coming days, these premises will be demolished to make way for the new health centre so once it gets the go-ahead, there will be no delay with the works.
The mayor stressed, “We are thus doing our bit to improve healthcare in Lorca in the face of the serious situation that Area III is going through and to reduce endless waiting lists, the collapse of emergencies and improve primary care in our municipality.”
He reiterated that the new San Cristóbal health centre has always been an important project for the local government team, which continues demanding a Primary Care Emergency Service (SUAP) although it has not been included “in the Primary Care Infrastructure Investment Plan 2022-2026 of the Ministry of Health itself”.
