ARCHIVED - Unauthorized irrigation farming reported on 989 hectares in the Campo de Cartagena
The land will be restored to non-irrigation farming or none at all
Amid the calls for action to protect the marine environment of the Mar Menor by changing agricultural practices in the Campo de Cartagena, on Monday the regional government of Murcia received 62 reports of unauthorized irrigation farming and instigated proceedings to ensure that the watering systems are dismantled and the land is returned either to non-irrgated farming or to none at all.
The reports were delivered by the CHS water infrastructures administration body and identify a total of 989 hectares of land, and procedures now begin to ensure that the land is restored to its original condition in compliance with Article 8 of the Law which established urgent measures to protect the Mar Menor in 2018. This states that “all land outside the established irrigation perimeter will be restored to its original condition … without this having any effect on the corresponding fines”.
These fines are now to be determined by the CHS, as gradually it appears that the administrative bodies concerned begin to take real action to regulate farming practices and land use in order to protect the marine environment in the lagoon, which is reported by scientists to be in critical condition.
