ARCHIVED - Two villas in northeast Murcia used in fraudulent scheme of crime against foreign citizens
Two Spanish men in Fortuna are accused of illegally applying to register foreign nationals at the properties
Two people in the Murcian municipality of Fortuna have been the subject of a police investigation as the alleged perpetrators of crimes against the rights of foreign citizens for using a couple of local properties to register people who didn’t live there permanently.
The investigation began in February last year when the Guardia Civil became aware of the existence of several applications for registration in which the address was always the same.
Investigators quickly found out that they were dealing with two chalets in Fortuna and sent social services to conduct interviews with the inhabitants who claimed to be renting the properties and living there. The discrepancy came because, in that same property, requests for residency registration and family reunification had been submitted in the names of many different people who didn’t actually live there.
One of the houses had a series of attached garages where, apparently, the foreign nationals, whose country or countries of origin have not been revealed, were temporarily housed and moved up to the main house to claim to live there when social services came calling.
Two Spanish men, aged 74 and 69, were behind the scheme to illegally file for residency for people not actually living at those addresses, and proceedings have now been launched against them both for “crimes against the rights of foreign citizens”, according to a Guardia Civil press release. This is because the application for a residency permit at a property which is not the applicants’ main residence is illegal, and the application made by the two men on behalf of the foreigners undermined their rights.
One of the men has also been investigated as the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of coercion and of breaking and entering.
It is strongly recommended to seek the advice of an official legal professional for help applying for civil or fiscal residency in Spain as a foreign citizen.
