Saint Patrick has strong links with Lorca dating back to 1452, the year in which the battle of Alporchones took place, a key confrontation in an era when the Moors were struggling to retain control of the lands they had conquered in the 8th century as the Christian armies of northern Spain gradually pushed them off Spanish soil.
During the morning at 11:00 there is a one euro English language guided tour down in the city below visiting the Colegiate of San Patricio, the third largest in the world dedicated to the patron saint of Ireland after the cathedrals of Saint Patrick in New York and Dublin. This could easily be enjoyed, then followed up by the tour inside Lorca castle and lunch.
The tour starts with lunch in the castle restaurant at 14:00, following which the castle can be explored using the English language audioguide to see the Espolón tower, walk along the walls like a medieval soldier, and visit the different exhibits showing lots of information about life within the castle walls.
Then an English speaking guide will take you into the 15th century Jewish quarter and Synagogue, the most representative and the best preserved building of the Jewish quarter of Lorca and unique in Spain.
Following this, the English guide accompanies you on a visit to the Alfonsina Tower, the main tower of the castle, which is only opened for accompanied tours.
