This article looks at 10 of the top Spanish players to have graced the sport and have a look at their most important achievements in the game.
Spain’s tennis legacy: A nation of champions
Tennis is a major sport in Spain, and as I have already mentioned the country has produced an array of international stars that are widely regarded within the sport. The history of clay court tennis is rich in the country, and of the 18 Spanish players that have won Grand Slam tournaments during the Open Era in either Singles, Doubles or Mixed, 15 of them have been victorious on the clay courts of Roland Garros. The early exposure of Spanish players to clay-court tennis enables players from the country to develop the skills and strategies needed to play on clay, which helps them to excel on the surface.
The country has won the Davis Cup on six occasions, while it has won the Billie Jean King Cup, formerly the Fed Cup, five times. Spain has also had several players that have been ranked No 1 in the world in both men’s tennis and women’s tennis. Players such as Rafa Nadal, Arantxa Sancez Vicario, Carlos Moya, Garbine Muguruza and Carlos Alcaraz have all at one stage or another been amongst the most dominant players in the world and found themselves at the top of lists of preferred players for fans of online tennis betting.
