ARCHIVED - Time running out for Spanish residents to change over driving licences
Following Brexit, the DGT (Spanish traffic authority) will only allow drivers to use UK licences for six months after entering Spain or becoming a resident.
We are almost halfway through the six-month ‘period of grace’ for UK driving licence holders who were resident in Spain and had registered with the DGT (Spanish traffic authority) before Brexit came into effect at the end of last year, meaning those who have yet to swap their licences for Spanish ones are running out of time as they only have until 30 June 2021.
There is some confusion as to whether the UK and Spain may reach an agreement to allow British drivers to exchange their licences for Spanish ones in the future, but for now, those who either didn’t register with the DGT before 30 December 2020 or became resident in Spain on or after 1 January 2021 will have to take all the tests to obtain a new Spanish licence, as will anyone who had registered but hasn’t made the swap by the end of June.
Details of the process for swapping licences can be found here (in Spanish only, but a translator or translation tool can help!): https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/permisos-de-conducir/canje-permisos/canje-permisos-extranjeros/canje-renovacion-sustitucion-uk/index.shtml?Reino%20Unido#
In a nutshell, applicants will need to prove they are residents, pay the fees (around 28 euros depending on the type of licence and whether it is a swap, renewal or change) and hand over their UK licences.
They will be provided with a temporary driving permit, only valid in Spain, which will allow them to drive while waiting for their new Spanish licence to arrive in the post.
Those who have been through the application process and are waiting for their new licences to arrive can use the following link for information:

As with all of the bureaucratic processes which are part of living in Spain, there are many professional translators or companies specialising in paperwork services who can help those with limited Spanish to navigate the paperwork trails required, and the fee charged is usually well worth the outlay for the peace of mind it provides.
Many social media groups in local areas are always happy to help with local contacts who can assist those with limited Spanish; make sure the company selected is fully legal for absolute peace of mind.
As stated above, there is a possibility that the procedure may change in the future, but for the moment anyone who is in the position stated above should be aware that the end of March is approaching, with the end of June not far behind it.
