Three out-of-the-way Murcia towns are among the most popular rural Spanish holiday destinations... and one makes the top 3!
Murcia is proving to be a region on the rise as more people from Spain and further afield opt for countryside get-aways

Tucked away in the northwest of Murcia, the charming town of Moratalla has been making waves in the world of rural tourism and it's not hard to see why. With its stunning natural surroundings, rich cultural heritage and abundance of country accommodations, it's the perfect destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
According to the latest Rural Tourism Search Study 2024, Moratalla has earned a coveted spot as the third most searched rural destination in Spain, with a whopping 45,000 Google searches last year. It was only pipped to the post by two great classics: Cazorla in Jaén and Alcalá del Júcar in Albacete.
But Moratalla isn't the only Murcia town that's catching the attention of rural tourism enthusiasts. Mula and Bullas are also making a name for themselves, with Mula coming in at 25th place with more than 11,000 searches and Bullas ranking 45th with nearly 8,000 queries.
It's no surprise given their unique charms - Mula's thousand-year-old history, Holy Week celebrations and natural beauty, and Bullas's wine tourism offerings and hiking routes.
Murcia as a whole is proving to be a Region on the rise when it comes to rural tourism, with a total of 226,000 searches related to holiday lets in the countryside in 2024. This puts it in 13th place nationwide, and it's clear that the Region's unique blend of culture, nature and hospitality is resonating with travellers.
The study also analysed search trends throughout the year and revealed that the month of July was the most popular in Murcia, with 25,390 queries, with August and January following closely behind.
And what's really interesting is that more than half of those searching for rural getaways in Murcia are actually from within the Region itself - 52.6% of searches come from locals looking to explore their own backyard.
But it's not just Murcianos who are taking notice, as enquiries are also pouring in from other parts of Spain including Alicante (13.3%), Madrid (5.3%), Valencia (5.1%) and Barcelona (4.3%).
