ARCHIVED - This week some regions of Spain move onto vaccinating the 30+ age group
Most areas of Spain are this week vaccinating the 40-49 age group
As patients aged between 40 and 49 queue up across Spain for their Covid vaccines, several regions have announced they are about to start on the next group, that of 30 to 39-year-olds; in fact the Canary Islands have already started!
The vaccination campaign continues slowly but surely across Spain, with the 40-49 age group currently receiving their first doses of Covid vaccine, yet the health authorities in various regions are already reporting their plans to start on the next group in line, that of patients in their 30s.
With the older members of the population now inoculated against coronavirus, younger adults now account for the majority of new Covid cases, hence the focus is now on getting them protected to keep incidence rates down and gradually see the back of the pandemic.
The Canary Islands reported last week that the health services will be starting to vaccinate those in their 30s now as patients aged 40-49 have all been contacted, and Castilla-La Mancha intends to start vaccinating the 30-39 group as of 21 June.
Andalusia hopes to start on the group next week, if possible, and Madrid intends to start contacting under 40s at the end of June or beginning of July, but both regions have stressed that it will depend on the availability of doses. Navarra also expects to vaccinate those in their 30s in July.
Patients aged between 40 and 49 are currently receiving doses of the Covid-19 vaccines by Pfizer, Moderna or Janssen, depending on availability and specific criteria. However, the Spanish Health Ministry has not authorised the single-dose vaccine by Janssen for use in under-40s due to possible links to a handful of cases of blood clots in patients in the US in April.
On Monday 1.3 million doses of Pfizer were delivered, as per contract and are this afternoon being delivered to the autonomous regions.
As of Friday, over 12 million residents of Spain had been fully vaccinated, 25.8 per cent of the population and nearly 21 million had been given at least one dose, 44.2 per cent of the population.
