ARCHIVED - Third Covid vaccine could be administered with flu jab in Spain
A decision is expected on Thursday on whether to extend the booster dose to more vulnerable groups in Spain
Spain’s general director of Public Health, Pilar Aparicio, announced on Wednesday September 15 that if it is decided that a coronavirus vaccine booster is required for the older population, it will most likely be administered alongside the annual flu jab. Speaking at a meeting organised by the Platform of Patient Organisations (POP), Mrs Aparicio said that while there is no rush to begin flu vaccinations, priority will be given to elderly people in primary care centres and nursing homes.
Covid experts are expected to meet on Thursday to discuss whether a third Covid vaccine is appropriate for the older age groups and those with compromised immune systems, but whatever the outcome, the 2021 flu jab campaign will be rolled out in late October and early November.
Nonetheless, some regions of Spain like Murcia are already stocking fewer flu jabs for the 2021 vaccination drive than they did last year.
At the meeting, officials emphasised the importance of keeping up to date with all vaccinations against infectious diseases, as older people or those with chronic illnesses run a higher risk of complications.
The question of whether to administer a booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine has divided opinion in Spain for months, with many experts arguing that the effectiveness of a third jab has not been proven and so to administer it now would be extremely premature. However, the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has indicated that the government will most likely begin offering a third dose to more vulnerable groups, such as those in nursing homes and people with cystic fibrosis or undergoing chemotherapy, as early as October 4.
