The Palacio de Guevara in Lorca will open to visitors in February
Renovations are also progressing on the Lorca Bullring, which will be inaugurated on March 30
The final touches are being applied to the extensive renovation project at Lorca’s Palacio de Guevara which should be ready to begin welcoming visitors in February next year.
The City Council invested 400,000 euros in restoring the 18th-century baroque jewel, with most of the funds allocated to preserving the original ceramic floor tiles and adapting the elevator to comply with new safety standards.
According to mayor Fulgencio Gil Jódar, the Red, Green and Yellow rooms are now finished and all that remains to be done is to decorate the palace with its priceless furniture, artwork and other pieces.
This enormous collection of artefacts incudes paintings by renowned artist Camacho Felizes de Alisén, as well as more than a hundred colourful fans, lithographs and weapons from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Because the palace houses such a wealth of historical pieces, new paintings and furniture will be constantly added to the exhibition while others are removed.
“Those who visit it will find new additions on each trip,” the mayor explained. “We will all have to visit the palace with some regularity to discover all the treasures that will be revealed for the first time.”
In addition to the Palacio de Guevara, the emblematic Sutullena Bullring is also undergoing a dramatic facelift and the new and improved space will be inaugurated on March 30, 'Sábado de Gloria', with the Paco Ureña bull run.
From next year, the Sutullena will not only be an important destination for bullfighting enthusiasts, but its uses will be expanded to include other cultural, sports and hospitality events.
This facility, the mayor said, will serve to “energise the city”.
“It has always been a regional reference and we intend for it to recover that power of attraction not only for the Guadalentín Region, but also for Vélez and Almanzora,” he added.
