As of the late summer of 2017 a new gastronomic market is open in Lorca, where the Mercado del Sol in the historic city centre has become the first establishment of its kind in the Region of Murcia.
Among the establishments occupying the 1,700 square metres of the market are a variety of food stalls including some offering Japanese and Mexican specialities. Also available are meat, seafood, beers and wines, cheeses, tapas, cocktails and local products, and as well as the booths selling these differnt foods there is also a children’s play area.
The market is located in a three-storey building which in the past was home to the Galerías Bertrand store, and which is one of the most unusual in the whole of Lorca. Dating from 1943, its distinctive giant chandelier, imperial staircase and paintings mark it out from the other historic buildings in the city and provide an appropriately prestigious setting for the Mercado del Sol.
The Mercado del Sol opens on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12.00 to 16:30 and again from 20:30 to midnight, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 12.00 to 16:30 and again from 20:30 to midnight.
Where to find the Mercado del Sol
The Mercado del Sol is right in the heart of Lorca, in the main shopping area, and looks out onto Calle Pio XII and Calle Cubo, both of which are perpendicular to Calle Corredera.
Address: Calle Pío XII, 13, 30800 Lorca, Murcia.
