The Casa de los Mula in Lorca

An 18th century residence in the Plaza de Juan Moreno in Lorca

The 18th-century Casa de Los Mula, also known as the Casa de los Menchirón Pérez-Monte, is one of the palatial residences which during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries came to symbolize the power and wealth of the city of Lorca, and led to its being nicknamed the “Ciudad de los Cien Escudo” (the city of 100 coast of arms).

The building was completed in 1711, the date which appears inscribed over the main doorway, and the coats of arms of the two aristocratic families which built it are featured alongside the first-floor balcony, carved by Juan Caro Serrano. This part of Lorca was much favoured by the wealthy classes, and close by are the Casa de los Salazar Rosso ( now home to the archaeological museum of Lorca) and the convents of La Merced (now home to the Lorca Visitors’ Centre) and Santo Domingo.

The Casa de los Mula stands in the Plaza de Juan Moreno, at the northern end of Calle Santo Domingo, and is one of many examples of the baroque style of architecture in Lorca. It consists of three storeys, and although the façade is a simple one it exudes authority in exactly the way that was hoped for by the Menchirón Pérez-Monte family.

In the 19^th century the three buildings occupied by the family residence were restored and extensively remodeled, and it is from this period that much of the interior dates, although further restoration was carried out in 2000.

The building is not open for public visits and remains in private hands, although can be viewed from outside. Walking from the Convento de la Merced, it can be seen opposite the municipal Archaeological Museum.
