ARCHIVED - The 2019-20 flu epidemic claims its first victim in Murcia
Vaccines are still available at health centres and from pharmacies all over Murcia
An elderly man has died of flu-related complications to an already existing condition
As the flu epidemic of 2019-20 escalates in the Region of Murcia it has been confirmed that the virus has claimed its first victim of the winter in the Region of Murcia due to complications of an already existing condition in a patient who died over the weekend.
According to Manuel Villegas, the minister for Health in the regional government, on Monday morning 40 people were on the wards in hospitals after being diagnosed with flu, following the detection of 2,403 more cases in Murcia last week. Sr Villegas also reports that this year’s epidemic is developing in a similar way to that of 2018-19, indicating that the virulence of the virus is likely to continue increasing for another fortnight.
Once again it is worth reiterating that flu vaccinations are still available at public health centres throughout Murcia and can also be purchased over the counter at pharmacies for just a few euros.
Last winter around 20,000 cases of flu were diagnosed in the Region, only half the figure for the year before, and 57 patients died from flu-related complications to already existing conditions.
