ARCHIVED - Storm Gloria death toll in Spain rises to 13
Three more fatalities in Catalunya on Thursday and as Gloria leaves Spain people are still missing in the Balearics
The torrential rain, violent winds and heavy snow of Storm Gloria has all but died out in Spain at last, although there was a spectacularly heavy hailstorm in Málaga on Thursday and yellow alerts are still in place in parts of Andalucía and the Pyrenees, but the death toll continued to rise on Thursday as three more fatalities were reported in Catalunya, bringing the total to 13.
The latest victims were a fisherman who was carried away by a wave in L'Ametlla de Mar in the province of Tarragona, a 69-year-old who suffered a similar fate in the port of Palamós (province of Girona) and a man who was found dead in Jorba in the province of Barcelona. With at least three people still missing in the Balearics, one UK national, the death toll could yet rise further still.
Throughout Catalunya the process is now under way of evaluating the damage done, with beaches washed away, bridges having collapsed and a trail of destruction having been blazed by Gloria, especially along the coastline. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited both Catalunya and the Balearics on Thursday to survey the effects of the storm and signalled his intention to likewise over the next few days in the Comunitat Valenciana, Murcia and Andalucía.
