ARCHIVED - Stolen plaque from Cartagena Semana Santa monument recovered
Damage to the Monumento al Procesionista has been constant since it was moved to its current location
The bronze plaque which was stolen a couple of weeks ago from the plinth underneath the Monumento al Procesionista, a statue or monument in the pedestrian centre of Cartagena which stands in honour of those who take part in the city’s renowned Semana Santa processions, has been recovered by officers of the Policía Nacional although it is reported that as yet the thief or thieves have not been detained.
The police explain that their success in tracing the missing plaque is attributable largely to information received from members of the public, and that the bronze plate has been tampered with, presumably in an attempt to conceal the fact that is comes from the statue in the centre of the city with a view to selling on the bronze as scrap metal. However, it is still possible to read the words “Monumento al Procesionista. A los hombres y mujeres que hacen posible la Semana Santa.”
The Town Hall will now decide whether it is possible to repair the plaque or whether it will be necessary to create a new one.
Since the monument was moved to its current location in the Plaza San Sebastián it has been vandalized on at least ten occasions, and when the latest misfortune was reported the police did not immediately rule out the theory that the creator of the monument could have removed the plaque himself to sell it on for melting down.
The Monumento al Procesionista was created by Manuel Ardil Pagán in 1983, when it was originally placed at the crossroads of Calle del Carmen with Calle Tolosa Latour, near the Plaza de España. It was moved to Plaza de San Sebastián in the late 1990s, since when breakages and vandalism have been constant. In 2016 the figures constituting the monument were placed on a plinth.
