ARCHIVED - Spanish government establishes coronavirus protocols for hotels and airports
Establishments with large numbers of visitors are to be made fully aware of emergency procedures
Among the measures outlined by the Spanish government on Tuesday to contain any possible escalation of the coronavirus in this country was the establishment of a protocol to be followed in hotels, airports and other areas where there are large numbers of visitors from abroad, the emphasis being on the message that the attitude of the authorities is one of “alert” rather than “alarm” and that the public health services are well equipped to deal with the threat.
Reyes Maroto, the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism explains that the protocol is designed to ensure that hotels and airports are fully informed of what action should be taken in the event of the virus being detected, insisting at the same time that the figures regarding cases of the virus in Spain remain “very low”. Of course there is already concern over the possible effect on tourism in the Spanish Costas this year, particularly in the Canaries, where at least 5 of the 11 cases so far confirmed in Spain have been located, but Sra Maroto repeated her reassurances that the government is fully prepared and that the Spanish public health system is “the best in the world”.
At a more local level Fernando López Miras, the president of the regional government of Murcia, issued a similar message calling for “calm” and stressing the need not to panic, and expressing confidence that the regional health service is also fully prepared to deal with the outbreak if it proves necessary. Sr López Miras repeated the message that sensible precautions to take are the same as those which are recommended during the flu epidemics which occur in Spain every winter, such as washing hands frequently and avoiding contact with people suffering from acute respiratory conditions wherever possible.
