ARCHIVED - Spain vaccination update September 23: more than 36 million people now double jabbed
A total of 76.4% of the population in Spain has now received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine
The latest data released from the Ministry of Health in Spain on Thursday September 23 shows that a total of 36,259,105 people, or 76.4%, have now been fully immunised against coronavirus, while 37,538,323 people, representing 79.1% of the population, have received at least one jab. These figures put Spain as one of the leading countries in Europe for administering both first and second doses, with 253,559 more people double jabbed between Monday and Thursday this week alone.
To date, a total of 66,642,236 doses of the Covid vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen have been administered throughout Spain, 92.4% of those distributed among the different autonomous communities. The Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has expressed her satisfaction with how the campaign has run so far, resulting in the country’s cumulative incidence rate continuing its downward trend to reach 71 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Thursday.
Fully vaccinated by age group
80 +: 100% / 2.898.527 people
70 to 79: 98.7% / 3.909.791 people
60 to 69: 97% / 5.175.288 people
50 to 59: 93.3% / 6.564.423 people
40 to 49: 85.8% / 6.768.383 people
30 to 39: 73.3% / 4.564.228 people
20 to 29: 72.3% / 3.573.244 people
12 to 19: 72.1% / 2.805.221 people
From the figures above it is clear that the younger age group has the fewest fully vaccinated which is unsurprising considering they were the last to be targeted by the campaign. However, since schools started up again for the autumn semester things have definitely slowed down, with 72.1% of 12 to 19-year-olds fully vaccinated on Thursday compared with 68.8% on Monday, representing just over 128,000 youngsters.
Vaccinations by autonomous communities
Asturias continues to lead the vaccine race with 83.5% of its population now fully vaccinated, but snapping at its heels are Galicia with 83.1% and Extremadura with 81.5%.
The Valencian Community has fully vaccinated 77.4% of people, the Region of Murcia sits at 74.7% while Andalucía comes in at 77.2%.
The Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in northern Africa remain at the back of the pack, having fully immunised just 67.3% and 60.6% respectively. Unsurprisingly, they also continue to be the communities with the highest 14-day cumulative incidence rate in Spain.
