ARCHIVED - Spain on alert for new cold snap and heavy snowfall
The DGT has urged those travelling in northern Spain to avoid driving if possible
The weather in much of Spain has been particularly unsettled for the past week or so, and the situation shows little sign of improving, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) placing a total of 18 provinces and the autonomous city of Melilla on alert for snowfall, wind and waves on Monday December 6.
Heavy clouds and intermittent rainfall is expected in the north of the country, while the occasional storm could occur in the Balearic Islands. The Canary Islands can expect cloudy skies and isolated weak precipitation, while cloudy intervals are also likely throughout southern areas.
Snowfall will be heavy at altitudes of between 700 and 1,000 metres in the western Pyrenees, and Aemet has activated an orange warning (significant risk) for snow in Huesca, Lleida and Navarra.
Strong winds are forecast throughout Monday in much of Spain and an orange warning has been issued for gusts on the island of Menorca, while yellow warnings are in place for Teruel, Ibiza, Firmentera, Mallorca, Barcelona, Lleida, Girona, Tarragona and Castellon. Valencia and Alicante are also on alert for adverse coastal phenomena caused by the strong winds.
Due to the expected bad weather, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has urged people travelling to the northern half of Spain after the December bridge to plan their journeys in advance, as yet more severe snowfall is expected on Wednesday December 8.
A new weather front entering on Tuesday will reduce the snow level to between 400 and 800 metres in the extreme north and from 1,000 to 1,400 in the southeast, making both secondary and high-capacity roads potentially treacherous.
With this forecast, the DGT has advised against all but essential travel in the north of Spain and has reiterated that “it is very important” to check the conditions before hitting the road.
