ARCHIVED - Spain launches Covid awareness campaign to target young people
Getting the message through to young people that group gatherings must stop is crucial in the fight against covid
It’s interesting to observe the reaction and behaviour of different age groups as the pandemic develops.
Elderly people and the at-risk are those with the most to lose and when out in the streets are usually masked-up and visibly uneasy should any-one invade their personal space.
Youngsters are frequently to be seen in groups, and are visibly less-concerned about their personal space and use of a mask as they perceive themselves as the least affected, the risk of serious illness lower amongst the younger members of the population.
But all over Spain, this segment of the population is causing the biggest headache for the authorities, as they are the least likely to comply with the regulations, particularly those relating to gatherings in larger groups and there are endless reports of illicit gatherings being broken up by police, followed by outbreaks of covid.
Time and time again, outbreaks are reported in relation to gatherings of young people, festive groups, social groups, sporting groups, and getting the message through to them that their collaboration is essential to stop covid spreading is proving a difficult challenge as social interaction is the glue that makes Spain what it is.
Spain revolves around its peñas, fiestas, cofradías, groups, clubs, sporting groups; everything is about group activity and everyone "belongs" to something, it's what communities revolve around, it's what defines community life here, which is why it is so difficult to tell these same groups that this year, there can´t be any fiestas, or marathons, or parades or floats or bikers breakfasts...this year everything has to be cancelled so that next year everything can return to normal.
The national Ministry of Health has launched a new campaign to try and specifically target this sector of the population, entitled, “this is not a game”.
The #EstoNoEsUnJuego campaign aims to reinforce compliance with the protection measures against Covid-19
The objective is to raise awareness in society in general - with special emphasis on young people - of the importance of following the recommendations of the health authorities to avoid new infections of COVID-19.
The Ministry of Health says that it is essential to follow the rule of the three m's: (mascarilla)mask, always use it; (manos)hands, wash them frequently, and (mantener la distancia de seguridad); keep a safe distance from other people, which in Spanish original is mascarilla, usarla siempre; manos, lavarlas con frecuencia, y mantener la distancia de seguridad con otras personas.
It is also important to restrict contacts to our usual groups, whether social or within the family.
The authorities find themselves in the difficult position that they can either; ask people to respect the guidelines and understand that most of the time they won´t, or try to force people to follow the guidelines, both of which options are fraught with perils of a different nature.
As case numbers continue to rise, and hospital beds re-fill, it's difficult to know which message will finally tip the balance and make those who have so far resisted the call for responsible behaviour to change their attitude.
Will it be when the business they work for closes down and they lose their job; will it be when a young, fit, healthy close friend comes out of hospital with ongoing health problems; will it be when their mother dies..... or do we just have to wait for a vaccine and hope that we can avoid infection until then. It's difficult to know how the authorities are going to call this when so many of us don´t want to hear the message.
