Spain investigates mystery deaths of four whales off Murcia coast

The protected marine area off the Murcia coast is home to one of the Mediterranean's most important populations of Cuvier's beaked whales

Spanish authorities are continuing to investigate the deaths of four young Cuvier's beaked whales found off the coasts of Murcia and Almería earlier this year, with military sonar still among the possible causes being examined.

The Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE) said both Spain's Ministry of Defence and the Ministry for Ecological Transition have responded to its concerns following the discovery of the whale calves in January.

According to ANSE, the Ministry of Defence has ruled out carrying out acoustic military exercises in the area on the dates the animals were found stranded, including one in Mazarrón and another in Águilas.

However, both ministries have confirmed they are reviewing the measures currently in place to protect vulnerable marine species during military operations. The work includes updating information on where these whales are most commonly found and assessing whether additional safeguards may be needed.

The animals were examined by specialists from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a team with extensive experience in marine mammal strandings. Although the full findings have not yet been published, ANSE said natural causes have already been ruled out and investigators are looking at other possible explanations.

Environmental groups believe the use of military sonar remains one of the most likely factors behind the deaths. ANSE has also called for investigations to include the possible involvement of vessels from other countries operating in nearby international waters.

Scientists have long linked some mass strandings of beaked whales to high-intensity sonar. The species is particularly sensitive to underwater noise and can react by making rapid ascents or fleeing at speed, behaviour that can lead to serious injury or death.

The waters off the Murcia coast are considered especially important for Cuvier's beaked whales and form part of a protected marine area known for its rich biodiversity and deep underwater canyons. At the same time, the area has traditionally been used for military exercises by the Spanish Navy and visiting allied forces.

ANSE stressed that military training and wildlife conservation do not have to be incompatible, but said any activities carried out in sensitive marine habitats should follow the latest scientific recommendations to minimise risks to protected species.
