ARCHIVED - Spain falls behind EU in electromobility
A major obstacle is the lack of electric vehicle charging points in Spain
Although electromobility has been improving by leaps and bounds in Spain in recent years, it still falls far below the European average and the rate of people buying into the concept has actually diminished this quarter, according to a recent report on electromobility indicators published by Anfac.
While Spain has certainly made great strides in reducing its emissions this year, improving its index by 2.3 points, reaching 23.1, the average achieved by other European countries has now reached 28.5 points.
The Anfac index is generated by taking into account several aspects which determine to what extent electric mobility has been adopted in a country, one of those being the sale of low-emission vehicles. In Spain, while this market has grown to an impressive 37.8 points so far in 2021, it is still a far cry from the 84 points registered by other EU nations.
Another major obstacle for Spain is the installation of charging points for electric vehicles. Spain currently has 11,847 charging points throughout the country, but some 86% of these are slow charging stations. In the third quarter of the year, only 330 new points have been installed, something which Spain urgently needs to address in order to encourage more drivers to go electric.
