ARCHIVED - Snow alert in north-west Murcia on Friday evening and Saturday morning
Winter refuses to leave the Costa Cálida as the clocks move forward to summer time
The spring is officially already almost a week old and on Saturday night the clocks are to be moved forward an hour as summer time begins in Spain and the rest of the EU, but in the Region of Murcia winter is making a determined effort to linger and the State meteorological agency Aemet has issued a yellow alert for probable snowfalls in the north-west.
The Aemet warning specifies that there is a 40 to 70 per cent chance of up to 4 centimetres of snow in north-western Murcia between 18.00 on Friday and 9.00 on Saturday, with up to 10 cm on higher ground at altitudes of at least 1,000 metres above sea level.
This follows a brief respite from the recent rain throughout Murcia on Thursday, but on Friday, as heavy clouds return to the Costa Cálida, temperatures are likely to fall again and showers are likely throughout Murcia from lunchtime onwards. The maximum temperatures are expected to reach no higher than 7 or 8 degrees in Yecla and Caravaca de la Cruz, 10 in Lorca and 13 or 14 in Murcia and Cartagena, with minimums dropping to close to zero in both Caravaca and Yecla.
Looking further ahead, the outlook for the rest of the weekend and the first half of next week is equally unpromising, with more rain on the way at least until the end of March… perfect conditions in which to obey the coronavirus lockdown and avoid leaving home unless absolutely necessary!
