ARCHIVED - Smart zebra crossings installed in the city of Murcia
The crossings detect pedestrians, warn oncoming motorists and collect data designed to improve road safety
As part of the “Murcia Smart City” strategy in the regional capital the Town Hall is working to install Intelligent Pedestrian Crossings on various of the busiest streets in the city centre, the intention being not only to make crossing the road safer but also, potentially, to reduce crime.
The Smart zebras contain sensors which can detect when pedestrians are about to cross the road and step onto the tarmac, activating lights installed above and on the road surface to warn oncoming motorists. These warning lights are fully visible even in the glare of sunlight, and when no pedestrians are detected they remain inactive, while those installed in the tarmac are non-slippery so as to avoid presenting added dangers to cyclists and motorcyclists.
The streets where the new crossings are already in place are Avenida Constitución (2), Calle Puerta Nueva and Plaza Ceballos, some of the busiest points in the city of Murcia: in 2020 it is estimated they were used by 14 million motor vehicles, fewer than the year before (18.5 million) due to reduced traffic on account of the pandemic but still an average of over 38,000 a day.
The new crossings also transmit data to the central Smart City platform, providing information concerning the number of people crossing and the frequency with which they do so: such data will help to understand mobility within the city centre in order to improve the ease of transit for both motorists and those on foot in the future.
