Second Mpox infection detected in Region of Murcia
Health authorities in Murcia are vaccinating close relatives of the infected man
The Ministry of Health reported a new case of mpox on Monday August 26, the second confirmed case of the virus, which used to be known as monkeypox, in the Region of Murcia this year and the 101st since the outbreak began in 2022.
The latest case relates to a middle-aged man who was diagnosed on Thursday August 22 although as usual, the health authorities haven’t revealed his location.
The Ministry of Health has confirmed that a study of close contacts has already been carried out and that vaccination is underway, although thankfully his symptoms are very mild and he hasn’t required hospital admission.
As the virus continues to spread, the Department of Health and the Murcian Health Service are meeting at the beginning of the week to establish an updated protocol to deal with any new cases.
The latest report from the Ministry of Health sets the number of cases recorded this year in Spain at 267, although this latest case from the Region of Murcia and another detected in Cantabria shortly after the last report was published haven’t yet been included.
So far, the autonomous community with the most cases of mpox infections this year is Madrid, with 118, followed by Andalucía, with 79 and Catalonia, with 23.
Samples from the latest patient in Murcia have been sent to a lab in Madrid to determine which strain he is suffering from. It’s worth noting that all infections in Spain so far are of the old variant, which has been circulating since 2022, and not the new, more virulent one that has been detected in Africa.
In total, 1,311 first doses of the mpox vaccine have been administered in the Region, and 267 patients are still waiting to receive the second jab.
Appointments for vaccinations can be made through the CARM Health Portal.
