The combination of snow, rain and strong winds has forced the closure of schools in many parts of the Region of Murcia, especially in the north-west, presenting children and teenagers with an unexpected day off and, no doubt, a chance to enjoy the relatively unusual experience of building snowmen and engaging in snowball fights.
The municipalities in which classes have been cancelled on Monday are Aledo, Yecla, Cehegín, Bullas, Caravaca de la Cruz, Moratalla, Pliego, Totana, Campos del Río and Jumilla, while the schools of Avilés, Coy, El Consejero, La Parroquia, Zarcilla de Ramos, Zarcilla de Totana and La Paca in the municipality of Lorca and Casas Nuevas in Mula are also closed for the day.
Conditions in the Region of Murcia are expected to improve by Tuesday morning but members of the public are advised to keep abreast of the situation and to avoid road travel unless it is absolutely necessary.
