ARCHIVED - Restoration of historic Roman baths resumes in Calpe
The archaeological site of the Banys de la Reina in the Marina Alta, Alicante province, is once again undergoing maintenance and restoration
For the third consecutive year, four months of vital restoration and maintenance will be carried out at the historic site of the Banys de la Reina in Calpe.
As part of the 20,000-euro project, Alicante firm Alebus Patrimonio Histórico will clear the whole site of weeds and shrubbery and begin restoring small sections which have, until now, been covered as a protective measure.
The works also include restoring part of a mosaic in the eastern section of the baths, and part of the former courtyard.
"The idea is to recover sections that are not currently on display, because they are covered to protect them from the elements. Once they have been restored, they will be made visible.
"We will restore a section of the complete mosaic of the eastern baths as well as the ambulatory of domus 1, also known as the courtyard, to allow us to see and understand what these decorated spaces were once like, and to give visitors a more complete view of the site," explained Director of Banys de la Reina, Alicia Luján.
Calpe Mayor, Ana Sala, added that the continued maintenance and restoration of the baths is "essential to prevent vegetation from damaging the structures of this site and to enhance the value of this unique archaeological complex".
And to raise awareness about the Roman site, the council's department of culture has organised two guided tours a month from January.
Banys de la Reina is one of the most important archaeological sites of its kind in Roman Hispania. It dates from the end of the 2nd Century AD to the 7th Century AD and covers an area of 10,000 square metres.
