Restaurante La Marquesita a secluded gem in the heart of Cartagena
Elegant setting and menu, set meal options and sumptuous lunchtime set menu
Restaurante La Marquesita is located in an attractively quiet location just a few metres from the main shopping streets of central Cartagena, where the shaded and sheltered outdoor terrace is adorned with flowers and the indoor dining area provides an equally welcoming atmosphere.
The visual elegance of the restaurant is matched by the quality menu, with house specialities ranging from duck confit cannelloni, fish dishes and fillet steak served with foie gras to the very traditional rice dishes of Murcia, albeit with imaginative ingredients.

A stylish location and a menu to match tucked behind the shopping streets of central Cartagena
WE HAVE NOW REOPENED!
Restaurante La Marquesita in Cartagena is a characterful and elegant restaurant, hidden away from the main pedestrian thoroughfares, yet centrally located in the heart of the main shopping areas of Cartagena, just one minute by foot from the Plaza de España.
This is a very popular venue both at lunchtime and in the evenings for the locals in Cartagena, but is easily overlooked by visitors due to its location hidden behind the main shopping streets. However, it’s well worth while taking a short detour from the Calle Carmen to find the Plaza de Alcolea, where La Marquesita is immediately visible as it nestles behind hundreds of colourful flowers in the shade of a large tree.
The attractive exterior is also a benefit in practical terms, as the terrace tables are warm and inviting in the cooler winter months and an ideal place to shelter from the sun in summer. At all times of the year it’s a great spot to take a rest while visiting the main shopping and sightseeing routes in Cartagena!
As for the menu at La Marquesita, the first thing which stands out is the beautiful presentation of all the dishes, which are made using the freshest produce. House specialities on the à la carte menu include cheek of veal with red wine, beef fillet with fresh duck foie gras and balsamic vinegar, duck confit cannelloni and a selection of fish dishes, including sea bass and cod with caramelized onions and pine kernels.
Alongside these items are the more traditional Mediterranean paellas and “caldero” (a rice dish with an intense flavour, cooked in a fish broth and served with pieces of fish and garlic mayonnaise).
Menu del Día
Although La Marquesita is a quality restaurant, eating out doesn’t have to break the bank and a Menu del Día is available for just 24.50€, including a choice of five starters, five main courses, numerous desserts, a drink (soft drink, wine or beer) and coffee. A special gluten-free menu is also priced at 24.50€.
The menu changes regularly, but on a typical day items such as Salmon tartar with avocado, Tender leaves salad with nuts, crispy ham and parmesan, Foie of duck with Pedro Ximénez sauce, and home-made soup start the menu, followed by vegetable and wild mushroom risotto, baked loin of pork stuffed with nuts and served with caramel sauce, grilled sea bass or cod with caramelized onions are amongst the dishes on offer, and black or white chocolate mousse, leche frita, and pastry with lemon ice cream and hot chocolate conclude the meal.
Set price menus
One of the most popular ways of eating out at La Marquesita, though, is to choose from the four set “sampler” menus. These are available at any table where at least two people are seated, and range in price from 30€ to 45€ per head, offering a wide selection of delicious dishes both at lunchtime and in the evening.
Family friendly
Inside, the tasteful decoration continues, with elegance and warmth matching the friendly welcome given by Almudena and her staff. This may be an aesthetically pleasing location for a meal, but at the same time diners should not be put off bringing children to La Marquesita: as well as a children’s menu, there are kids’ tables and chairs, baby changing facilities and even a selection of toys to keep the youngsters out of harm’s way while the grown-ups enjoy their meal!
How to get to La Marquesita in Cartagena
Most visitors to the city of Cartagena tend to make their way up the Calle Mayor from the port, and if this is the case simply continue to the Plaza Icue (containing the statue of the young boy with a fish) and take the right fork along Calle Carmen. This leads to the Plaza de España, where a sharp right turn almost doubling back on the Calle Carmen leads directly into the Plaza Alcolea.
Alternatively, parking is usually available close to the restaurant, if not on Calle Salitre, Calle Carlos III and the Plaza de España then in the underground car park which is accessed at the southern end of the Alameda de San Antón.
