Region of Murcia graced with 34 blue flag beaches this summer
Sadly, for the seventh consecutive year, the Mar Menor has lost out on the honour
It’s official: as Spain rockets towards a bumper summer season, the Region of Murcia has been awarded no fewer than 34 blue flags this year, 28 on beaches and six for its impressive marinas. This is the same number as last year but 2023 welcomes the additions of El Portús in Cartagena, Las Salinas and Torre Derribada in San Pedro del Pinatar.
There is a downside though, as the Mar Menor has once again missed out on the prestigious accolade, for the seventh year running.
A blue flag award depends on many different factors like the facilities on offer, beach safety and of course, the quality. Here, Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon sadly falls short, but a number of innovative projects are currently underway that will hopefully turn the tide.
This year, Águilas is the undisputed winner of the blue flag race, racking up almost a dozen. The favoured bathing spots this year are in Calarreona, La Carolina, La Casica Verde, La Colonia, La Higuerica, Las Delicias, Levante, Matalentisco and Poniente. In addition to El Portús, in Cartagena Cala Cortina, Isla Plana, La Azohía-El Cuartel, Levante-Cabo de Palos, San Ginés and La Chapineta.
In second place is Mazarrón, with five flags awarded to the beaches of Rihuete, Bahia, Narea, Grande-Castellar and El Mojon. San Pedro del Pinatar, in addition to winning two new awards, maintains the flag it had on El Mojón beach last year and has newly won the prize for La Torre Derribada and Las Salinas.
In addition, the Las Salinas Centre in San Pedro has also been re-awarded the ‘Blue Centre’ status.
Calnegre cove in Lorca retains its flag, as do the beaches of La Ensenada del Esparto and El Pedrucho in Lorca and Banco del Tabal-Calnegre in Cartagena.
Finally, six marinas in the Region have been awarded the distinction: Club Náutico de Águilas, Club de Regatas de Mazarrón, Marina Salinas (San Pedro del Pinatar), Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena, Yacht Port Cartagena and the Juan Montiel marina, in Águilas.
