ARCHIVED - Protests over Three Kings parade in Sevilla as metal objects are thrown at crowds
Hardware goods and cleaning products take the place of sweets and toys in Utrera
An investigation is under way in the town of Utrera, 30 kilometres south-east of the city of Sevilla, after the Three Kings parade on 5th January was marred by metal nuts, bolts and screws being thrown from at least one of the parade floats taking part in one of the largest processions of the year.
It is, of course, the custom in Spain for Their Royal Highnesses Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar to launch large numbers of sweets and small toys to the crowds lining their parade routes all over the country. But rather than stopping at a confectionary store or a toy shop on the way to Utrera it appears that Their Majesties were more attracted by a hardware store this year, acquiring a large number of metallic and ceramic items along with scouring sponges and other household cleaning products which residents have reported as being a potential health risk as children (and their parents) joined the scramble to pick up as many of the free gifts as possible.
From reports on social media it appears that many of the unusual festive gifts were thrown from the float manned by Father Christmas, and the Town Hall is investigating exactly what happened while criticizing the “irresponsibility” of those concerned. At the same time the organizers of the parade report that their concern for safety is such that even footballs and other balls are banned in case they cause falls, and the options allowed are limited to sweets and items made of flexible plastic, sponge and soft materials such as textiles.
Thankfully no injuries have been reported, but it can be assumed that when the next parade takes place in Utrera on 5th January 2021 the Three Kings and the others taking part will be subjected to exhaustive security checks before the event begins!
