ARCHIVED - Protection Civil use Heimlich manoeuvre to save life of baby in San Pedro del Pinatar
The baby was only seven days old but went into cardiorespiratory arrest due to an obstruction of the respiratory tract
Volunteers from Protección Civíl and Cruz Roja spend years training for that one moment when somebody is in desperate need of their help and on Wednesday afternoon all that dedication paid off for two volunteers from Protección Civíl in San Pedro del Pinatar who saved the life of a seven-day-old baby which had gone into cardiorespiratory arrest due to an obstruction of the respiratory tract.
In a message posted on its Twitter profile, the Emergency services reported that the events occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the 112 services received a call advising that the newborn baby had no pulse and had stopped breathing.
A Protección Civíl ambulance equipped with basic life support material was the closest vehicle able to answer the call and its two personnel performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on the baby for a minute (a first aid procedure used to treat upper airway obstructions or choking), at which point the child began to cry.
"You are the heroes of that mother!", the service said in its tweet, congratulating the two personnel who had saved the life of the baby.
“We’re proud to work alongside you“, they concluded, echoing the sentiments of all those who have been helped by Protección Civil over the years.
“Congratulations you two.”
