Portman Bay regeneration project pushed back to September
The plans to rejuvenate the La Unión bay area have already been halted several times
In yet another disappointment for the residents of La Unión, the renovation of Portmán Bay has been delayed for the umpteenth time. The Ministry for Ecological Transition has now pushed the project back until September as they have deemed the preliminary studies carried out by the Centre for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (Cedex) “insufficient”.
The study was intended to provide a framework for drafting a new project plan. However, sources close to the project revealed that the analysis fell short of expectations.
The project, initially estimated to cost nearly 340,000 euros and take nine months to complete, has been plagued by delays and setbacks.
Open-cast mining operations in the bay between 1957 and 1987 left behind millions of tonnes of sterile waste, creating a massive environmental hazard. Despite promises to regenerate the area and attract visitors to the natural enclave, progress has been slow. The project has been marred by technical and environmental challenges, as well as legal disputes, since it was first put on the table back in 2019.
With the clock ticking, government officials are under pressure to find a solution. According to official sources, large-scale work on the project is set to begin in April “and will last at least eight weeks”. Additional time will then be needed for deliberations and issuing reports, pushing the timeline for a final decision further down the line.
Based on this timeline, the Ministry has cautiously predicted that “some decision could be communicated by September.”
