Popular electric scooter service Hopp axed in Orihuela Costa after paperwork mix-up
The company had been operating in the area for six years before Orihuela Town Hall issued a decree ending the service

Orihuela Costa has lost a really popular service after Orihuela Town Hall issued a decree shutting down Hopp, the electric scooter rental company that had been operating in the area for the past six years.
The closure has come as a surprise to many residents, not least because the reason behind it has nothing to do with safety concerns or rule-breaking, but rather a paperwork error made during a recent tender process in which a single administrative form was reportedly placed in the wrong envelope.
Hopp says the Town Hall declined to allow the mistake to be corrected and instead moved to shut the service down entirely, a decision the company describes as disproportionate given its track record. During its six years of operation, Hopp contributed to local taxes and ran self-funded road safety classes for children in the area.
The consequences of the closure are being felt on two fronts. Fifteen local jobs have been lost as a direct result of the decision, and residents in Orihuela Costa are now without what many considered their most practical transport alternative. Public transport in the area has long been a source of frustration, with bus routes widely regarded as insufficient and failing to reach many parts of the coast.
For those without a car or looking to avoid using one, the scooter service filled a gap that nothing else currently covers.
There's also an environmental dimension to the debate. Hopp operated an entirely electric fleet, and its removal means one fewer sustainable transport option in an area where the only straightforward alternative is the private car.
Hopp has launched a campaign calling on residents to push back against the decision, asking people to contact the Mayor's office and sign a petition that has already gathered hundreds of signatures.
