ARCHIVED - Police forced to close beach as social distancing was impossible
This was on the Murcia border with Alicante in Pilar de la Horadada
Yesterday the WHO reported the largest ever number of new Covid cases in a single day; 230,000 of them.
Yesterday I made the mistake of going to the weekly market in Puerto de Mazarrón and was initially delighted to see that the 2 metre lines had been removed so I could choose my own fruit again and other stalls had returned, but within 10 minutes I was feeling anxious and uncomfortable as other shoppers failed to respect my own desire to maintain social distancing, pushed into me when I was waiting to pay as they were too impatient to just wait, couples clogged up the front of the stands instead of one person standing back so that the other could pay and allow somebody else a bit of space to make their shopping without being jostled by sweaty fellow shoppers and generally ignored the fact that we're in the middle of a worldwide pandemic which has killed more than half a million people and will cause long-term health problems for hundreds of thousands of people who have survivied it.
Our health authorities keep warning us not to be complacent, there are new outbreaks all over Spain; this weekend several regions decided to enforce the wearing of masks to better protect us and yet the public seem hellbent on creating the greatest possible risk to themselves.
Just on the border with Murcia, police in Pilar de la Horadada were forced to close the beach of playa de las Higuericas because so many people packed onto the beach and they felt it wasn´t safe for anyone.
They issued an apology on social media, explaining that this was for the safety of everyone and asked us to use our common sense…….
I’ll give the market a miss next week.
