ARCHIVED - Operation waiting lists increase by 8 days in Murcia
Waiting times for an initial consultation in the Region of Murcia have decreased
The coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions which accompanied it have complicated access to health services over the past year and a half, but even as Spain appears to be beating the fifth wave into retreat, waiting lists in hospitals in the Region of Murcia continue to grow.
The latest figures released by the Murcian Health Service (SMS) show that while the delay to see a specialist for an initial consultation has reduced compared to 2020, the number of patients waiting for surgery has actually doubled, figures that are much worse than at the height of the health crisis in December last year.
In September this year, the average wait time for patients going under the knife was 106.21 days, eight days more than last December. In addition, the number of people requiring surgical intervention in Murcia has increased from 21,877 to 24,987.
However, year on year, the waiting time has dropped from 127 days to 106 days between September 2020 and 2021.
The delays of course vary across disciplines, with patients awaiting plastic surgery faring the worst with an average of 145 days. This is followed by trauma surgery at 129 days and vascular surgery at 126 days. By municipality, Lorca is by far the worst with an average wait time of 147 days per patient.
Even though the number of patients waiting for a first consultation has practically doubled in the last nine months, delays have actually decreased from 102 days to 90, but one in four patients in Murcia haven’t even received an appointment date.
The regional health authorities have been quick to highlight the main point: that waiting lists for the month of September decreased compared to the same month the previous year, and indeed compared to August this year. With these positive indicators, officials are confident that delays will continue to diminish in the Region of Murcia as the year goes on.
