As measures are introduced in all aspects of society and daily life to attempt to halt the spread of the coronavirus in Spain one of the latest steps announced by the Ministry of Health, and published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE) on Monday, is a total ban on funeral wakes or vigils and the imposition of a maximum of three mourners at funerals.
The justification offered for these restrictions is that the characteristics of funerals make it impossible to apply the social distancing rules which are in place throughout Spain and to guarantee at least 1 metre between the individuals attending. Wakes are banned not only in public and privately run “tanatorios”, but also in private homes, and the usual aesthetic procedures carried out on the deceased are also to be suspended for an unspecified period.
The regulation also prohibits the holding of religious and civil ceremonies until after the coronavirus emergency is lifted and establishes that close family members of coronavirus victims should remain in their homes in quarantine.
Such is the increased demand for funeral services in Spain at present that the BOE also includes a ban on prices being raised, establishing that the bereaved may not be charge more than the rates published prior to the declaration of the state of emergency on 14th March.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.
