ARCHIVED - One dead and 2 missing in gota fría flooding in Catalunya
The confirmed fatality occurred in Arenys in the province of Barcelona
Much of the region of Catalunya suffered heavy flooding on Tuesday as the gota fría storm struck in north-eastern Spain, and on Wednesday morning it was concerned that at least one person died as a result with another two still missing.
Shortly before 9.00 in the morning the body of the victim, a man in his seventies, was discovered on the beach of Caldes d’Estrac, very close to Arenys de Mar in the province of Barcelona, after he disappeared from the nearby town of Arenys de Munt. The search is still on, though, for a 70-year-old woman and her 40-year-old son who were swept away by floodwater in Vilaverd in Tarragona when the River Francoli burst its banks.
In some parts of Catalunya over 200 millimetres of rain have been recorded in the last 24 hours and on Wednesday morning a red alert was still in place, although later in the day the worst of the rain is expected to move west towards the northern Spanish regions of the Basque Country, Asturias and Cantabria.
