ARCHIVED - New rules for dog owners in the Valencia region
As well as picking up excrement, canine owners in Alicante and the rest of the region will have to carry water to clean up afterwards
In a bid to clean up the streets in the Valencia region, a new Coexistence Ordinance has been drawn up which means dog owners must now not only pick up their pets’ excrement, but also carry a bottle of water to wash the area down afterwards and clean urine.
The new government ruling also specifies that owners must carry a minimum of two bags with them whilst out their canines, and only they, or an “authorised responsible person” can walk the dog. Whoever does so will be “obliged to collect, remove and clean up in a hygienic way any excrement the animal produces”. It’s not yet clear what penalties will be faced by owners who flout the new ruling.
In addition, the new ordinance includes public health guidelines which apply to everyone.
As of this week, it is forbidden to “defecate, urinate or spit on public roads”, behaviour that will be sanctioned as “minor offences” where there is no justification for doing so.
But in the event they are carried out “in spaces with a crowded influx of people or which are frequented by minors”, these offences will treated as “serious”.
The same applies if such behaviour occurs “in the vicinity of monuments, buildings of special cataloging and institutional or administrative buildings”.
In a similar vein, the city of Cartagena in the neighbouring Region of Murcia has launched a new campaign for the month of September to encourage pet owners to pick up after their dogs and will provide free water and plastic bags.
