ARCHIVED - New record international tourism figures in Spain in 2019
The increase was achieved despite a slight drop in the numbers of British and German tourists
The Spanish government’s provisional data for 2019 show that the number of visitors to this country from abroad during the year rose by 1.2 per cent to reach a new record high of 83.7 million, marking the seventh consecutive annual increase.
It could be imagined that a rise of only 1.2 per cent might come as something of a disappointment, but it must be pointed out that it has been achieved despite the figures for the peak summer season on the Costas being lower than in 2018. In addition, there have been considerable increases in the numbers of people coming from the markets of Asia and the USA, offsetting falls in the number of tourists coming to Spain for the most important traditional sources of international tourism, the UK and Germany.
Furthermore, the Spanish tourism sector suffered an important blow with the collapse of the international tour operator Thomas Cook, and Minister Reyes Maroto attributes the strong performance towards the end of the year at least in part to the speed with which the government reacted.
At the same time, the Minister reports that the amount spent by visitors from abroad last year increased by 2.9 per cent to 92,337 million euros, another new record high. To put that into more easily understandable terms, the figure equates to approximately 10.5 MILLION EUROS EVERY HOUR: small wonder that tourism accounts for such an important part of the Spanish economy as a whole!
This is further underlined by the fact that there are some 2.4 million people employed in the tourism sector in Spain, accounting for around 12 per cent of all the jobs in the country!
