Here’s the top image of the month taken by the Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC)
This month’s LADCC photo competition was entitled ‘Natural History’ and was, for many of our members, another challenging title. The end results proved varied with many wonderful photos taken, including animals, insects, jellyfish, dinosaurs, flora and even a moody church scene.
Gary Hull won this month’s competition with his beautiful close-up photo of a bee. This beautiful bee is a great example of ‘being’ there in the moment (excuse the pun!), enabling you to get the shot you want. The photo chosen as the winner was, we think you’ll agree, stunning. However, after the competition was over, Gary also shared his winning bee photo with a frame. He wanted to emphasise what a difference can be made to an already good photo when you add a frame to the picture.
However, one of the talking points at the competition’s results meeting was of a photo taken by new member Louise McCartney. She also chose a moving object for her subject but the photo needed looking at closely!
“What is it?”… was the first reaction of many of us, obviously a ‘critter’ of some sort! Louise explained she was holding a leaf which a caterpillar was wrapping itself around. This proved quite a tricky scenario for the photographer! Whilst Louise’s daughter looked on with intent, and was captured in the photo, the caterpillar wasn’t going to keep still and Louise had to keep moving the leaf so that the caterpillar was going to stay in focus. Where’s the camera in this? Right-handed Louise had to then take the camera in her left hand and turn it upside down in the process, presumably whilst asking the beastie to please keep still, and then find the shutter button. We think the end result was well worth the effort and great job Louise for holding on in there!
The club launches itself into summer with next month’s competition entitled ‘Golden Hour’. For photographers it is that hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset where the light becomes gold coloured and the shadows are longer and softer. It is a lovely natural light which enhances photos if used in the right way. From initial discussions though, it appears that the majority of the group will be taking photos before sunset and NOT after sunrise!
The club usually meets twice a month with an indoor meeting and then, usually, an outing toward the end of the month where the group gets together to collectively work on the monthly competition. The club welcomes new members, either visitors or residents. With modern day technology we can all keep in contact for training sessions and sharing knowledge etc via ‘group chats’ or Zoom meetings.

Share the pleasure of photography in the Mar Menor area
The Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC) was founded in 2006 and was originally called the LA Digital Cafe, where members met over a coffee to discuss photography. This quickly developed into a more formal programme of monthly photo competitions and outings to places of photographic interest.
Over the years, the club has adapted to the changes in camera technology and techniques, and continued throughout Covid by using ‘Zoom’ for online meetings and learning sessions.
Fast forward to 2024, and the club is now a small, enthusiastic, friendly group where members encourage and support each other at the start of, and throughout, their photographic journey. The group includes a wide range of people with varying skills, all of whom are happy to share techniques, tips and ideas to improve one’s hobby.
They have monthly competitions and outings that provide an opportunity to explore different aspects of photography and develop camera craft and artistic skills. Their indoor sessions may include in-house training, reviews of monthly competitions or planning outings to cover topics discussed.
They meet once a month at the ‘Centro Cultural las Claras’ in Los Narejos, which has super facilities and ample parking. Any outings are usually towards the end of the month to link in with our regular competitions.
