Murcia official criticises delays on flood measures, including Camposol riverbed
In the wake of the Valencia flood, one regional assembly deputy has criticised delays in installing flood measures... including the redirecting of the Camposol rambla
Since the recent flood disaster occurred in Valencia, Letur and nearby areas the attention of those in authority has been focused on the vulnerability of other areas at risk of flooding.
This has prompted Murcia Regional Assembly Deputy Víctor Egío to criticise the national authority responsible for rivers, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) and the Murcia regional government (CARM) for the slowness of the progress of work to construct the various flood prevention measures that have been in the planning and report stage for years.
Deputy Egío highlighted among others the new channelling of the Rambla de Los Aznares in Mazarrón which runs through the Camposol Urbanisation, other areas at risk mentioned were Los Alcázares, Béjar, Biznaga, Nogalte, La Torrecilla, Lébor and Las Moreras all of these have had flood measures talked about but no construction has occurred.
Although numerous meetings, reports and viability studies have been carried out the CHS is yet to approve anything definitively. This has led to the regional government spokesman for emergencies, Marcos Ortuño, to point the finger at the CHS saying, "Papers do not stop the water; infrastructure, does."
The Rambla de los Aznares, a dry riverbed that runs through Sector D of the Camposol urbanisation has long been problematic, administratively as well as physically, particularly in 2014 when after a severe rain event known as a Gota Fría or DANA the rambla flooded causing extensive damage to property in its path. A number of solutions concerning the re-routing of the rambla have been proposed over the years and a round table consisting of the CHS, Mazarrón Council and the regional government of Murcia was set up by Mazarrón Council to agree on a solution.
Alternative 4
At the last round table meeting, the regional government put forward an option 4 which, unlike previous alternatives, travels outside the urbanisation's infrastructure. It was decided by the three authorities at the meeting that option 4 was the favoured solution and the CHS asked for further technical studies to be carried out by their own technicians, the result of these studies have yet to be published.
