ARCHIVED - Murcia man charged for capturing two protected turtles
The Spanish pond turtles were removed from their natural freshwater habitat in the Murcia Region
The Guardia Civil have charged a man for illegally capturing two Spanish pond turtles while fishing in the Segura river close to the town of Calasparra in the north-west of the Region of Murcia. Officials sources report that these reptiles, also called Mauremys leprosa, are protected under the Law on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity.
Specialised agents from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) and Guardia Civil officers discovered the two freshwater turtles in the suspect’s vehicle while carrying out a routine check, and the man claimed he had found them in a well while out fishing.
SEPRONA officers removed the turtles and they are now being housed at the ‘El Valle’ Wildlife Recovery Centre in Murcia.
This species, also known as the Mediterranean pond turtle, is commonly found in the waters of the Region, and indeed throughout much of south-western Europe. It is, however, considered a protected species, and so the suspect was charged for removing them from their natural habitat.
