ARCHIVED - Murcia cut flower sector lost an estimated 23 million euros to the Covid crisis
The regional Government is seeking aid for the sector from the national Government
Murcia is the sixth largest producer and exporter in the cut flower and pot plant sector in terms of sales by province, with almost 20 million euros of export sales during 2019 according to the Minister for Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment , Antonio Luengo, who visited the Barberet & Blanc company in Puerto Lumbreras this week.
Luengo explained that "during the first months of 2020, flower production grew by 4.24 percent and exports by 8.92 percent, but the sector has suffered severely from the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, as sales for Easter, parties and celebrations were suspended, generating serious losses estimated at 23 million euros”.
The regional Minister toured the installations of the Barberet & Blanc company in Puerto Lumbreras, “the main exporter of cuttings nationwide, and exporting to more than 60 countries, its facilities with a high level of phytosanitary security, laboratories and facilities for the production of crops in vitro".
Currently it produces two out of every three poinsettias that are sold in the country, in addition to geraniums and up to more than 160 ornamental varieties, and also has a germplasm bank that allows the renewal of production stock in case of any phytosanitary problems.
The cut flower sector is very important in the Region of Murcia and in municipalities such as Puerto Lumbreras especially so. 400 people from the locality are employed in just this one company, and the Minister said that aid had been sought from the central Government for the sector in order to help it survive post-Covid.
