ARCHIVED - Murcia Covid vaccination program begins for the over-80s in Cartagena next week
Outpatient units at Murcia hospitals begin to re-open as the third wave declines at last
After a slow start to the coronavirus vaccination campaign in Spain, which has been hampered by problems in the supply line of Pfizer and a dispute between the EU and AstraZeneca, it has been confirmed that next week the vaccines will at last be reaching the general population in the Region of Murcia as the first doses are administered to over-80s in Cartagena.
Making the announcement on Thursday, Juan José Pedreño, the Health spokesman of the regional government, explained that the process will necessarily be a gradual one as it is determined by the availability of the Pfizer and Moderna vacines: the national government has ruled that the AstraZeneca vaccine is not to be administered on those aged over 55.
Sr Pedreño also revealed that an error made by the national Ministry of Health has led to the Region of Murcia now expecting 11,700 vials fewer than had been thought in the first three weeks of March: the spokesman reports that the Ministry miscalculated the distribution of doses among the regions of Spain when taking into account the number of people aged over 80 in each of them.
As for the AstraZeneca vaccine, Sr Pedreño stated that the Ministry will be distributing 250,000 doses among the regional health services as of this weekend in order for vaccination to begin among groups such as police officers, firefighters and schoolteachers aged under 55.
Meanwhile, as Covid incidence rates continue to fall and the strain on hospital resources begins to ease, surgical units in the hospitals of Murcia are beginning to resume normal schedules. Some outpatient consultancy units are beginning to re-open after closing in order to allocate more staff to Covid patients, although the situation differs from hospital to hospital.
