ARCHIVED - Murcia Covid Update July 28: Two Covid deaths in the Region as infections soar
The number of new infections in the Region of Murcia continues its steady climb and two more people have lost their lives
The image shows the current rise in Covid cases
The impact of the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic has sadly started translating into an increase in deaths, with the Ministry of Health reporting that two people lost their lives to Covid on Tuesday, July 27 in the Murcia region. One of the victims was a 40-year-old woman who gave birth two weeks ago after being admitted into intensive care with Covid-19. The second fatality was an 89-year-old man from Lorca. These two deaths take the total death toll in the Region of Murcia up to 1,616.
Infections have risen to 539 in the last 24 hours and the overall positivity is sitting at almost 9 per cent, which is a very high figure and almost double the level set by the WHO at which the virus is considered to be under control. 6,000 PCR and antigen tests were carried out within the latest 24-hour period.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 123,534 people have been diagnosed with Covid in the Region.
Of the 539 new cases, 163 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 39 to Cartagena, 32 to Molina de Segura and 31 to Lorca, with the remaining infections distributed throughout the other municipalities.
The cumulative incidence rate over a 14 day period had reached 424.15 on Tuesday, and while this is a significant increase it is still below the Spanish national average of 701.92, although more than eight times higher than a couple of months ago in the region.
On a positive note, hospitals were given some respite on Tuesday as the number of patients admitted fell to 132 compared with 139 the previous day. This is still 65 patients more than on the same day a week ago, and there are now 23 people in intensive care, the majority of whom haven’t been vaccinated. This level of patients was last seen in March.
Vaccination Update: In the Region, a total of 1,636,594 vaccinations have been administered with 756,548 people now fully vaccinated in Murcia.
